Overview

About Lipid Profile

A Lipid Profile looks at the fats circulating in your blood: total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. It is one of the most commonly ordered tests for anyone over 40, or younger patients with a family history of heart disease.

Preparation matters here more than for most tests. We ask patients to fast for 9 to 12 hours beforehand, since a recent meal, especially anything fatty, can temporarily push your triglyceride reading up and distort the full picture.

Once your results are in, your doctor will look at the balance between LDL (often called bad cholesterol) and HDL (the protective kind), not just the total number, to judge your heart disease risk.

What's Included

Total Cholesterol

The overall amount of cholesterol in your blood.
A starting point, but LDL and HDL matter more for risk assessment.

LDL Cholesterol

Often called bad cholesterol; higher levels raise heart disease risk.
Diet and exercise can meaningfully shift this number.

HDL Cholesterol

The protective, good cholesterol.
Higher HDL is generally favourable for heart health.

Triglycerides

Blood fats that rise sharply after fatty meals or alcohol.
This is why fasting before the test matters so much.

How to Prepare

  • Fast for 9 to 12 hours. Nothing to eat. This is the rule that actually matters.
  • Plain water is allowed and encouraged. Being dehydrated does not improve your results and makes the blood draw harder.
  • No tea, coffee, juice or milk during the fast. Tea with milk and sugar breaks the fast, and this is the single most common mistake we see.
  • Avoid a heavy or oily meal the night before. It will show up in your triglycerides.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours if applicable, as it raises triglycerides sharply.
  • Book the earliest morning slot. Fasting overnight and testing at 9 AM is far easier than fasting through a working day.
  • Continue prescribed medicines unless your doctor has specifically told you otherwise, but tell us what you are taking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I fast before a Lipid Profile test?

We recommend fasting for 9 to 12 hours, water is fine, so your triglyceride and cholesterol readings reflect your normal baseline rather than your last meal.
Generally, LDL under 100 mg/dL is considered optimal, though your target may be lower if you already have heart disease or diabetes, so your doctor will personalise this.
Triglycerides in particular can spike temporarily after eating, sometimes for several hours, so an accurate fasting window keeps your result reliable.
Most healthy adults are advised to test every one to two years, while those with heart disease, diabetes or high cholesterol are usually tested more often, per their doctor’s advice.
Same day, typically within a few hours of your fasting blood draw, delivered digitally so you do not need to wait around.
Yes, this is actually the easiest way to manage the fasting window. Book an early morning home visit and our phlebotomist will draw your sample before you break your fast.
