Overview
About ALT (SGPT)
ALT, also called SGPT, is one of the most sensitive markers of liver cell health. It is often the first thing to rise when the liver is under stress, whether from fatty liver, viral hepatitis, or certain medications.
No fasting is strictly required, though a light meal beforehand is preferred. Because ALT is so specific to the liver, doctors often use it alone to monitor patients already diagnosed with a liver condition, without repeating the full LFT panel every time.
